The new version 5.0 features improved SMS capability which gives conversational chat-like blackberry customers experience with a single contact list for the personal mobile-to-mobile communications. In order to access the SMS functionality, customers should have BlackBerry Device Software 5.0 or maybe later.
Further, to personalize the SMS experience, the application enables customers to select an image from the BlackBerry device gallery and save it as their private or personal avatar. They could also view other avatars in the contact list and zoom in on the avatars of contacts involved in a conversation by choosing 'view participants'.
Reportedly, the new version enables customers to receive or send large files or data including audio, pictures and more up to 6MegaBytes. With the improved group functionality customers could share, communicate and update with a subset community. The BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 application helps the customers to add contact to the contact list ( i.e. BlackBerry Messenger) by displaying a two-dimensional bar code that could be captured by the invitees with their gadget cameras. Fascinatingly, the contacts are backed-up on a server, removing the need for the BlackBerry Desktop Manager.
